Terre Haute/Vigo County is conveniently located on Indiana's major east-west artery, Interstate Highway 70 and equidistant to the major north-south Interstates of 69 and 65.  Interstate Highway 74 is within closer proximity.

Our location near both the population and geographic centers of the United States is one of our most powerful elements for success.  We are centered in America's industrial, distribution and transportation heartland.  Highly accessible from points north, south, east and west, it is no wonder that Terre Haute/Vigo County is becoming a fast-growing employment center.

Interstate Highway 70 (east-west) and U.S. Highway 41 (north-south) enhance the community’s transportation needs to move people and goods effectively. In addition, State Roads 42 and 46 (east-west), and State Road 63 (north-south); U.S. Highway 40 (east-west) and U.S. Highways 41 and 150 (north-south) play a pivotal role in the future transportation network.

Positioned extremely well from a transportation perspective, Terre Haute/Vigo County, Indiana is a leader in planning for future needs.  In March 2000, the Federal Highway Administration issued the Record of Decision for State Road 641, the Terre Haute Bypass project.  The bypass would connect U.S. Highway 41 to State Road 46 at Interstate Highway 70.  The project would be four-lane, 6.2 mile new construction highway that would take the traveler around congestion and eleven stop lights improving the U.S. Highway 41 corridor near the I-70 interchange.  The bypass would be eliminating three miles of vehicle travel from the existing 9.2 mile route.

Phase I and Phase II segments (the western portion of the project) are near completion with an estimated access date in the summer of 2010.  Completion for the bypass as a whole is estimated to be 2018.  Funding for the US Highway 641 Bypass is through the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).  The project is estimated to cost $120 million.  For additional information on SR 641 Bypass click here.
